Why is it called The Manhattan Project?

Updated: Aug 18, 2023

Maybe you wondered the same thing I did when I saw the movie, Oppenheimer. If the atom bomb was built in New Mexico, why is it called The Manhattan Project?

A quick search and I found a New York Times article from 2007, a year after the book, American Prometheus: the Trials & Triumphs of J. Robert Oppenheimer, came out — the book that inspired the new movie. Journalist, William J Broad, goes on a tour of sites in Manhattan with Robert S. Norris, a historian of the atomic age, that explains the origin of the name.

Now that you've seen the movie, the people and experiments that Dr. Norris mentions in this article will make perfect sense.
